Finishing

Painting: walls and ceilings

A painted wall is 80% preparation and 20% paint. If the filling is poor it shows in the first morning sun, and no expensive paint fixes that.

Painting: walls and ceilings

What the job includes

  • Covering furniture and floors, masking the edges
  • Filling and sanding old cracks and holes
  • Primer plus two coats of paint
  • Cutting in edges and trims by hand
  • Cleaning up and removing the masking the same day

How we do it

We look at what is on the wall now: emulsion will not go over limewash without washing first, and old wallpaper paste has to come off. Sanding is done with a vacuum-extracted sander, so the flat is liveable the next day. For a broken corner or a larger crack we recommend scrim tape rather than filler alone — otherwise the same spot cracks again.

Good to know

The square metre price assumes an ordinary flat wall. If the wall is badly uneven or needs three coats of filler, we say so at the survey and give a separate price — that is honest work, not a surcharge.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to dry?

Four to six hours between coats, usable the next day. Full hardness takes about two weeks, so avoid scrubbing the wall until then.

Who buys the paint?

Either. If we buy, we pick something suited to the surface and you get the receipt — 10% handling is added.
